Area Survey, Mentor OH

In 2006, Mentor, OH was considered to be the 68th best place to live in the United States, by CNN Money, a now defunct financial news channel. Ten years have passed, CNN Money is no more, and little seems to have changed in Mentor. There is much good news- a reported 1700 companies call Mentor home, according to Wikipedia, which seems a little farfetched, as that would mean 1 company for every three people. When corporations call a commuter town home, that can mean good traffic for advanced dentistry, but that does not seem to be the case in Mentor OH. The median household income of $64,000 exceeds the national average, and if accompanied by a growing local population, that could mean growth in dentistry. What the combination of a stagnant population growth and income growth has meant in Mentor is the intercession of chain dental- Aspen Dental, Bright Now Dental Dental Works, Great Expressions, and local chain Hudec Dental eat up a lot of space along the main drag, highway 2. The contrast between a growing Midwest suburb that has overcome the demise of the rust belt, such as Maple Grove, MN, and the towns that ring Cleveland comes into focus. Chain dental hangs over such locales like a buzzard- their primary tactics include inexpensive dentures. They do not appeal to a young, family oriented demographic. It is not fashionable to wear dentures.

However, we do find a few outstanding offices in Mentor, in particular Great Lakes Dental and Erieview Dental, general dental offices scoring 20 and 18 points respectively, at the edge of advanced dental marketing practices, but both offices have created quite a distance between themselves and the pack, and offer a good contrast to the proliferation of dental chains. Competition between the local offices of dental chains, who are the beneficiaries of a national advertising budget drives down prices, and calls old out bound marketing techniques into question, as the locally owned office could never compete in this arena. The best weapon that locally owned dental offices have against chain dental is a healthy events schedule- local health expos are the best place to meet potential customers. We have been unable to identify a program for health expos based in Mentor. Nevertheless, Great Lakes Dental and Erie View Dental both brand well, and utilize Facebook and Google+ as their primary social media outlets for contact with the community and reviews- as once again, Yelp seems invisible. Both offices could greatly benefit from an events strategy to close the deal.

This week we will visit some other outlying towns in the Cleveland area, and also look downtown to see the impact of Community Health Center dentistry on the local scene.
